My art show opens tomorrow in Seattle. It is at Velouria Boutique & Gallery, February 11th 6-9pm, part of the Ballard Art Walk. I've been hard at work, making these mystical ladies and getting very little sleep. I made them up and they're not even real! They won't be real until you look at them with your eyes. we are snowed in here in seattle in the middle of a mini blizzard! the whole city has been shut down since tuesday, a white, calm blanket on everything. it's been fun, and magical, and i've been hard at work on my upcoming show in february. i started making these little animal ladies in between the show pieces as a way to take a "break", but rather like the way they are turning out.

A year's end is always surreal, the feeling of time slipping between your fingers, a mark of time you can look at as a whole. One of the most amazing moments of 2011 for me was being able to see the West Memphis 3 walk out of prison as free men after 18 years. While that ending was far from perfect, I am hopeful that someday soon there will be full exoneration for them.

Spending time with Jason these last few months has been an amazing gift. Being able to spend Christmas with him, watching him learn to drive, carve his first pumpkin ever, jumping in a lake in the middle of the night, or just sitting by the fire and playing with my dog, all these simple things are suddenly amazing.

I try to never forget a lot of things, like how flawed our justice system is, or that Washington state still has the death penalty, or how lucky we all are in the grand scheme of things, and that magic is all around us. But most of all, I try to never forget that I am free.

Happy 2012! I’m going to do my best to learn to be present, and really live in the moment. xo

a long time ago a dear friend of mine, who loved to take photos, gave me a black and white photo of her feet similar to the above photo. she was standing in the sand in santa cruz. her toes buried in it, a rush of water almost upon them. the photo resulted in her lens falling into the water just as the wave was sucked away from the earth. the lens was lost, but the photo remains, i still have it framed in my home.

that dear friend of mine would have been 30 years old on this very day.

My friend Heather was in an accident and we are having a benefit to help ease the burden of her many medical bills. I made the event poster and will have some art in the auction. I also did the cover for Heather's last EP, Latency, and am a huge fan of hers. More info below. xo

Benefit to help Seattle-based musician Heather Duby recover from a recent accident

"Heather Duby was in an accident that crushed her right and her left hand. It was thought both hands might have to be amputated when she was first seen at the emergency room, but thanks to the expertise of the hand specialist team at UMDNJ Hospital, both hands were able to be saved. They are, however, substantially compromised.

She has undergone 7 surgeries to replace skin, bone and tendon, and still has at least 2 or 3 remaining. She did lose half of her right middle finger, and is currently waiting to have 3 tendons replaced in the left fingers. The surgery for tendon replacement is delayed until her recent skin graft surgery (which involves a 15 inch donor site from her leg) has healed enough to allow another invasive procedure. She is unable to work or play music right now, and it will likely be a long period of time before this changes."

Our goal is to raise funds to ease her financial burden during this time, and to help her get quality physical therapy over the next couple of years...so that she will be able to continue to write and play her beautiful music~

this was my favorite piece that i made for the moon worship show.

once again i'll be heading down to california tomorrow. i feel so happy that i have been traveling so much lately. fall is full on here so it will be nice to get some sun and warmth. october really is the best month. this one has flown by with trips to the pumpkin patch, cozy nights by the fireplace, and lots of autumn scented candles. soon it will be the best day of the year, HALLOWEEN! hope you're dressing up as something spooky, i know i am. then it's back to drawing, painting, and making things. xo

sometimes i have these dreams that we can pour it all out and let it all be gone. it is explained, in the dream, that there is room for all of it in infinite space. fill all that darkness with darkness, it can take it.

incandescence is light produced from heat. that is what i say just before i wake up, every time.

by no stretch of the imagination am i old. my youth is both a memory and a dream, saturating everything that my adult eyes see, steering me like a rudder. i think of this more often then ever. the foundation of interests, the discoveries of a child ever present on my current course. i wonder if the dreams my son has now will come to him like deja vu when he is older and beyond the home i've made for us. i know not everyone is so nostalgic, i try most times to think of it like a gift, the ability to hold the past and present almost at equal weight on a scale. sometimes it tips too heavy and i feel foolish for allowing myself to be so consumed with a time i'll never see again, forever with fever for days gone by.

is youth a dream? did i wake from it when my son was born? i often feel that having a child at a young age trapped me in a state of fake adulthood. i wasn't ready to grow up, but the real life weight of single parenthood was hardly willing to listen. i feel stunted in some ways, and old in others. selfish for wanting time in my own head, selfish for wanting time at all. it didn't have to be so black and white, but i made it that way. i think it was easier at the time to quit wanting things for myself.

i buried my dreams too soon. this is just one of the places i dug them up.

i just want to sing songs with my friends.

i'm back.

i realized i've hardly posted any photos from all the travels i did this summer. i'm gonna step to it. this is from a graveyard in edinburgh in july. the moon was full and it was close to midnight. magic. i kept thinking about the people we bury inside of us, in our hearts or the back of our minds. people we don't know anymore. little graveyards in our hearts. this was a church yard. the next day i went back in the daytime and realized that beyond the cemetery wall was a park with a carousel. interesting to walk back and forth between the two. i'll never forget this night.

dark and light. positive and negative. really hard to keep a balance of these energies sometimes. we need both of them. sometimes the light is so hard to find. it can be easier to let the negative take you over. as a person who wants to be full of hope and wonder, i often need reminders to stay positive. this is one of them.
